Slow Cooker Beef Stew Recipe (1)

Growing up, our mom made this stew all the time. It is so simple to put all the ingredients in your slow cookerand let it cook all day.

This is the perfect meal for a cold day and your house will smell absolutely amazing.

I love making this on busy or cold days, and coming home to a nice warm dinner. It’s quick, simple, delicious, and definitely a family favorite.

Want to make this recipe in the Instant Pot?

I make it a little bit different. Here are the ingredients you will need:

  • 1 (1 pound) package baby carrots
  • 3 russet potatoes, peeled and cut
  • 2 pounds beef stew meat
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 ribs celery, diced
  • 1 cup frozen green peas

INSTRUCTIONS:
Place all ingredients in the Instant Pot. Stir just enough to mix spices. Cover and cook on manual or high pressure for 30 minutes. You can do a quick release or let it release on it’s own. Mix and serve.

what do i serve with this stew?

I love stew, but I also love the side dishes and bread that we serve with stew. If you need a few ideas of what to serve this meal with, here is what we recommend:

  • Easy Cheesy Garlic Bread: We love this bread. It is exactly what it says it is, EASY. It is delicious.
  • 30 Minute Dinner Rolls: These rolls are so fast, and practically fail proof. Spread a little butter on them, and get dipping them in your stew.
  • Italian Fresh Green Salad: This fresh Italian salad, makes the perfect side dish and is so simple to throw together.
  • Sweet Cornbread: Nothing warms the soul better than some stew and corn bread. You will love this home style combination and all the amazing flavor.

Really any bread or soup pairing would be perfect for this recipe. It’s simple, delicious, and they both taste great with a hearty soup, such as this one.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound baby carrots
  • 3 russet potatoes (peeled and cubed)
  • 2 pounds beef stew meat
  • 1 ½ cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 Tablespoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 onion (diced)
  • 2 stalks celery (diced)
  • 1 cup green peas we used frozen

Instructions

Notes

To turn this into a freezer meal:

Add all ingredients to a gallon-sized freezer meal bag. Squeeze out as much air as possible and seal bag closed. Place freezer bag into freezer and it will last 60-90 days. When ready to use, spray inside of slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray and dump ingredients from bag into slow cooker. Place the lid on top and cook for 9-10 hours on low heat (you can cook it for 5-6 hours on high heat, but it will not be as tender as cooking it low and slow. We highly recommend low and slow!). Follow the rest of the instructions as written.

Just tried out this recipe today! It was very delicious, but a little dry. Kind of more like a pot roast vs a stew. When you make it, is it more of a thick soup or creamy? And if so, how do you achieve this?? :p The only differences I made were no worchestershire sauce, but I added in more beef broth [I used broth instead of stock as well]. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

This came out really good. I made my own broth so I put in more than the recipe called for, it was a bit watery but had a great flavor. Definitely going to make it again.

I added some tomato paste and a little flour/butter as a thickener. Yummy stew! :-)

Made this a couple nights ago. It was wonderful. Used deer meat and it was so tender. Carrots and potatoes etc were perfect as well . We added mushrooms because my husband thinks they should be added to everything. I committed the Worcestershire sauce because I didn't have any on hand and refuse to purchase any ingredient if it's only a tsp.I added about three tablespoons of soy sauce instead . I cooked on the high setting. Not sure if the bay leaves were necessary. Will probably omit those next time as well to save even more money. Thanks for the great recipe. Another wonderful pinterest find !

We had this for dinner tonight, we really enjoyed it. I will definitely add this to our easy and yummy family meals. Thanks!

  13. Cari says:

I made this for dinner tonight. It was on the thin side, so different from other stews I've had but it was very tasty. With there being more of a small amount of broth instead of a gravy I might try to put in more meat next time. Everyone cleaned out their bowls so it was a win.

  14. Nicole Atlas says:

made the instant pot version and it was delicious but over cooked, i think I'll try 25 min next time instead of 30 min

  15. Debbie Buckner says:

You said a tbsp of salt, did you mean a tsp? I added way more stock because it just looked dry and I was afraid of things sticking to the crockpot. I also did more meat because I couldn't find two lbs, Walmart was selling like 1.5 or 2.5 so I decided to go over instead of under.

  16. Momma Cyd says:

We meant 1 Tablespoon, but this is one of those ingredients where you can totally cut back to what you like to your own taste. 1 teaspoon is great too.

  17. Darci says:

My family loves this recipe although if you have more then 5 people in your family or want seconds, or leftovers, I recomend doubling or even tripling the recipe. It barely serves 6. We have 3 kids and it only takes one small bowl for each of us for the whole soup to be eaten up. I also recommend thickening it with something. I usually add 2 TBSP of brown gravy mix for added flavor and thickening.
